Angel Reese’s stressed-out admission about life in Chicago sparks concern about Sky and WNBA future

Angel Reese demanded and captured attention during her rookie year in the WNBA. Though her Chicago Sky narrowly missed out on the playoffs and she ended the season injured, Reese’s burgeoning media empire has only grown over the course of 2024 — buoyed by her All Star-worthy performances on the hardwood.

Reese averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game after Chicago selected her seventh overall in the star-studded 2024 draft. However, her ascent to stardom took place under head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, and Reese grieved when “Spoon” was fired shortly after the season. Reese’s reaction lent credence to the idea that someday — maybe even someday soon — she would want to continue her career somewhere else.

Reese has to “get up out of” Chicago

As the midwestern United States hunkers down for the winter to come, Reese is feeling stressed out by the snow. Chicago prepared for up to three inches of snow on Thursday, and Reese used her favorite platform — X/Twitter — to tell her 667,000 followers that she just had to “get up outta” Chi-town.

The post seems to have no bearing on Reese’s happiness playing for the Sky. While she was deeply disappointed that the franchise parted ways with Weatherspoon in September, Reese is still the player around whom Chicago is going to build in the years to come — and if her game expands beyond the restricted area, she will become one of the most dangerous and complete players in the WNBA.

Angel Reese’s bold confession spurs heated debate: “WNBA salary won’t pay my rent”

Though Reese is highly unlikely to ask out of or otherwise leave Chicago’s WNBA franchise anytime soon, it is worth noting that the Sky have lacked stability as an organization since it won the 2021 WNBA Finals. Reese approved Chicago’s hire of Tyler Marsh as the new head coach, but Marsh is already Reese’s second coach in as many years in the pros. Moreover, Chennedy Carter — the Sky’s top scorer in 2024 — is a free agent and could leave the team; her 17.5 points per game will not be easy to replace. Only time will tell if Reese’s ambitions outgrow the Sky as her profile continues to grow, and her portfolio continues to expand.
Besides, maybe she’ll adjust to the snow. After all, Reese was born and raised in Maryland
